Throughout the year, the library covers different material pertaining to Library and Reading skills. We are proud to promote reading and a love of reading by using skills that make reading easier and more enjoyable for students. Student in grades 3-6 will participate in a year-long book club in which they read in Library class for 15 minutes until they complete their chapter book. They will then take an Accelerated Reader test to earn points for prizes. Most children have found that when they start a book, they can't wait until next week to read more! We also have certain curriculums we will be completing at different times throughout the year. Current news will be posted to keep you up to date. Students in grades 3-6 are participating in a curriculum called the "World Almanac for Kids." This curriculum teaches children to use the Almanac to find facts fast. "Coach Al" and I will be coaching the children on how to become effective in finding these facts. At the end of the curriculum, the students will participate in the "World Almania for Kids" contest. It is laid out like a Jeopardy game where teams of five compete in finding facts for points. The top two teams out of each match will face off in an "Ultimate World Almania for Kids" contest. It should be great fun for all paticipants. Students in second grade will be starting the "Dive into the Dictionary" series where they will be instructed on how to use the dictionary effectively. This skill will be built upon every year until students reach the sixth grade. Students in Kindergarten and first grade are currently reading a book called "Fribble and the Secret Key." This book introduces children to the library and the resources in it. Kindergarten will complete several coloring sheets that reinforce the skills talked about in the story. They also get to explore these resources while they are in class. First grade students complete activities involving the dictionary, phone book, encyclopedia, and the library catalog. Again, these are important skills that will be built upon throughout their years at Springdale. |

Accelerated Reader has been helping teachers motivate and monitor large amounts of student reading practice. The quizzes are motivational because they ensure a successful, positive experience if the student has read a book at the proper reading level. Students can participate in this program in the library, as well as in their classroom. Genre Honors Genre Honors stresses reading success, writing skills, and technology skills. Reading selections from various genres are available from which students may choose to read. Students read three books from a chosen genre. For each book read, the students successfully complete an Accelerated Reader test, write a short review of the book, and complete a technology-related project. Upon completion of these requirements, students will receive a badge representing the chosen genre, and an extra 100 averaged into their English grade. Their name will appear on the Genre Honors Wall. Library Cadets Library Cadets is a library-service group which practices information skills, develops responsibility and good citizenship habits, and provides services to the school community through various library-related tasks. Love-A-Book Love-A-Book is a book donation program that allows students, faulty, parents, and friends to donate books to the Springdale Elementary Library collection. Donors can provide information to be inserted inside the book that will be located on the Love-A-Book shelf. |
