School Programs

 

21st Century/LEAP Afterschool Program-- The SAFE (Students Academically Futhering their Education)/LEAP Program is free of charge and is available to all students in grades K-8. The SAFE/LEAP program operates Monday through Thursday during the hours of 3:15-5:15 p.m. Students are divided into grade levels and are under the supervision of a teacher and a teaching assistant. Students have the opportunity to complete homework with assistance, do enrichment activities that suppplement the core curriculum, receive a nutritious snack and physical education time. Transportation is prvovided for those who need it.

Pre Kindergarten--A preschool class for 4 year olds is available within our school. Applications are available at The Alpha School or contact the preschool teacher Allison Harrison 626-3067. Space is limited to 20 students. In addition to Mrs. Allison, preK has a full time teaching assisitant, Mrs. Charlene. PreK has a curriculum consisting of Scott Foresman Reading, Creative Curriculum and supplements with other materials. See our photo gallery of cute snapshots of preschool life!

Honors Math Class--An accelerated math program begins in the 5th grade for qualifying students. Eighth grade students have the opportunity to leave Midway with a high school credit in Algebra 1. Our math program has guidelines to follow to ensure tha each student meets the requirements for the adavanced math classes.

Reading Intervention Programs--We have added numerous intervention programs to be used with students who are identified as being deficient in reading based on assessment scores and performance. Reading intervention programs offered at Midway include: Fundations, Wilson, Quick Reads, Essential Skills, Fluency First, Language!, Linda Moode Bell, Sing-Spell-Read and Write, Read Well, and Read Naturally.

DIBELS--(Dynamic Inidicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) These are short one minute fluency drills used to monitor the progress of literacy skills in grades K-6. The tests are individually given to every student three times a year to benchmark the developoment of fluency skills. From these benchmarking testing dates the students are placed into appropriate reading interventions according to level of success. The students who are identified as at-risk for reding difficulties are individually progress monitored monthly.
