School Clubs and Activities

4-H-- Students in grades 4-8 are given the opportunity to participate in 4-H once per month. Members of the county extension office come to school once each month to hold an organized club meeting in each classroom. Students participate in various community sevice projects and arts and crafts opportunities/contests.

Time Release Bible Lady--Parents of students in grades 1-8 are given the opportunity to sign a release form for a school bus to pick up their child and transport them to a nearby church for Bible Lady lessons. This occurs for one hour once each month.

Spelling Bee--Each winter homerooms in grades 4-8 hold classroom spelling bees. Winners from each homeroom are invited to participate in the school wide spelling bee. A school winner is sent to the county spelling bee held sometime at the beginning of February.

Math Olympics--A selected group of 3rd-8th graders are chosen to compete in the county math oplympics. This competition is usually held in the spring.

Jr. Beta Club--Students in the 8th grade with a grade point average of 91 are invited to join the Jr. Beta Club. This is an academic club that places an emphasis on the importance of good grades and academic success. This school year our Beta Club participated in the state Jr. Beta Club Convention in Nashville, TN.

First Priority--Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are given the choice to meet before school in the gym regularly throughout the school year. The students are sponsored by community members and staff members. This is a religious based organization and is optional for the students.

Band--Students have the opportunity to participate in band at Midway School. It accomodates grades 5 through 8. The Midway Band usually performs on Veterans day, Pep Rallies, and various other programs. The Band is directed by Mitzi Hall who has been at Midway since 1986. Ms. Hall performs regularly with the symphony of the Mountains in Kingsport, TN as well as other area orchestra including Knoxville Symphony and Asheville Symphony.
